Maharaja Institute of Technology Mysuru is an autonomous institute, effective from 2023, affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. The institute promotes academic curriculum as per the needs of the industry and new developments in the various fields.
The office of the Controller of Examinations was established in the year 2023 after the conferment of Autonomous status to the institute
The examination for the autonomous courses is conducted by the Institute, in two stages emphasizing continuous Internal Evaluation [CIE] throughout the semester and Semester End Examination [SEE] at the end of the semester. Complete examination process is executed by the Office of the Controller of Examination in coordination with all departments.

1. What is a Make-up Examination?
A Make-up Examination is a special examination opportunity provided under the Autonomous Academic Rules & Regulations of MIT Mysore to eligible students who have been awarded a Absent grade AB Grade later upon approval of the Principal/ Competent Authority declared as transitional I-Grade) or X-Grade or in a course.
The Make-up Examination is conducted on the dates notified in the Academic Calendar and/or official examination notification issued by the Office of the Controller of Examinations (CoE).
2. Who is ordinarily eligible to appear for the Make-up Examination?
Under the prevailing MIT Mysore Autonomous Academic Rules & Regulations, the Make-up Examination facility is available to students who have been awarded:
- AB-Grade later converted as I-Grade, or
- X-Grade,
subject to fulfilment of the applicable academic, attendance and examination requirements.
The eligibility of a student shall be determined in accordance with the latest approved regulations and examination notifications.
3. Is a student securing an F-Grade eligible for the Make-up Examination?
No.
An F-Grade is treated separately from the transitional I-Grade/X-Grade provisions.
A student securing an F-Grade in a course shall reappear for that course in the subsequent Semester End Examination (SEE) as prescribed under the applicable B.E. Academic Rules & Regulations.
The CIE marks awarded at the student’s first attempt shall be carried forward, subject to the applicable regulations.
4. What is an I-Grade?
An I-Grade is a transitional grade awarded in accordance with the approved Academic Rules & Regulations when the final assessment requirements of a course have not been completed within the prescribed examination/assessment process.
5. What is an X-Grade?
An X-Grade is a transitional grade awarded in accordance with the approved Academic Rules & Regulations.
A student awarded an X-Grade shall be eligible for the Make-up Examination subject to the applicable regulations.
6. When is the Make-up Examination conducted?
The Make-up Examination shall be conducted on the dates notified in the Academic Calendar and/or through an official notification issued by the Office of the Controller of Examinations. Under regular circumstances, Make-Up examination shall be scheduled after the completion of the immediately preceded regular examination.
Students are required to follow the officially notified timetable.
7. Where will the Make-up Examination timetable be published?
The timetable and other examination-related instructions shall be communicated through the official communication channels of MIT Mysore, including notifications issued by the Office of the Controller of Examinations.
Students shall be responsible for checking the official notifications and appearing for the examination as per the notified schedule.
8. Is the Make-up Examination conducted at the same academic standard as the regular SEE?
Yes.
The standard of the Make-up Examination shall be the same as that of the regular Semester End Examination (SEE) for the concerned course.
Students shall therefore prepare according to the approved syllabus, Scheme of Teaching and Evaluation, and examination pattern applicable to the course.
9. Is the syllabus for the Make-up Examination different from the regular SEE syllabus?
No.
The Make-up Examination shall ordinarily be based on the approved syllabus applicable to the concerned course.
Students shall refer to the current approved syllabus and any official examination instructions issued by the Institute.
10. How will the grade be treated after a student with an I-Grade appears for the Make-up Examination?
In the case of an I-Grade, the grade earned by the student in the Make-up Examination shall be retained, as prescribed in the MIT Mysore Autonomous Academic Rules & Regulations.
11. How will the grade be treated after a student with an X-Grade appears for the Make-up Examination?
In the case of an X-Grade, the grade shall be treated as prescribed under the applicable regulations.
Under the published General Academic Rules:
- Grades O to C shall be reduced to the next lower grade.
- Grade P shall remain P.
The latest approved regulation shall prevail in the event of any amendment.
12. Is the Make-up Examination a general grade-improvement examination?
No.
The Make-up Examination is not intended as a general facility for improving an already awarded regular grade.
It is primarily intended for students who fall within the I-Grade/X-Grade provisions of the applicable regulations and for such exceptional cases as may be specifically approved by the competent authority under the prevailing rules.
SPECIAL / EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES
13. Can a student who could not appear for the regular examination because of a genuine emergency be considered for a Make-up Examination?
Yes, in exceptional and genuine circumstances, a student who was unable to appear for a scheduled regular examination due to circumstances beyond the student’s reasonable control may be considered for permission to appear for a Make-up Examination, subject to approval by the competent authority.
Such circumstances may include, but are not limited to:
- Death of a parent or immediate/direct family member;
- Hospitalization of the student on the date(s) of the regular examination on account of illness;
- Serious medical emergency affecting the student;
- Other unforeseen and exceptional circumstances of a similar nature.
Such consideration shall be subject to:
- timely submission of a written request;
- production of appropriate documentary evidence;
- verification of the circumstances;
- fulfilment of applicable academic and attendance requirements; and
- approval by the competent authority.
Such exceptional consideration shall not be construed as an automatic entitlement to a Make-up Examination.
14. What if a student misses an examination because of the death of a parent or immediate family member?
A student who is unable to appear for a scheduled examination due to the death of a parent or immediate/direct family member may submit a request for special consideration.
The request should be submitted to the Head of the Department and/or Office of the Controller of Examinations at the earliest possible opportunity, together with appropriate supporting evidence.
The case shall be considered on its merits by the competent authority in accordance with the prevailing rules.
15. What if a student is hospitalized on the date of the regular examination?
A student who is hospitalized on the date(s) of the scheduled examination may request special consideration, provided the student submits appropriate documentary evidence.
The evidence may include, as applicable:
- Hospital admission record;
- Medical certificate;
- Discharge summary;
- Treatment record;
- Other authenticated medical documentation.
The Institute may verify the documents before considering the request.
16. What if a student is hospitalized on the date of the regular examination due to Medico Legal Case (MLC) arising out of Collision or Crash?
A student who is hospitalized on the date(s) of the scheduled examination may request special consideration, provided the student submits appropriate documentary evidence.
The evidence may include, as applicable:
- First Inspection Report (FIR copy)
- Hospital admission record;
- Medical certificate;
- Discharge summary;
- Treatment record;
- Other authenticated medical documentation.
The Institute may verify the documents before considering the request.
17. What documentary evidence is required for exceptional circumstances?
The documentary evidence shall depend upon the circumstances of the case.
Examples include:

The Institute reserves the right to seek additional or original documents wherever necessary.
18. By when should a student submit a request for “special consideration”?
The student shall submit the request at the earliest possible opportunity or within three days of the schedule of that particular examination, whichever is earliest.
Where prior intimation is reasonably possible, the student should inform the HoD/Office of the CoE before the examination.
Where prior intimation is not possible because of the emergency, the student shall inform the Institute immediately after the circumstances permit and submit the formal request and supporting documents within the period prescribed by the Office of the CoE.
19. Does submission of a request automatically grant permission to write the Make-up Examination?
No.
Submission of a request does not by itself create a right to appear for the Make-up Examination.
Each case shall be:
- examined on its merits;
- supported by appropriate documentary evidence;
- subject to verification wherever necessary; and
- approved by the competent authority.
Only after formal approval shall the student be permitted to appear, where applicable.
20. Can mere absence from the regular examination be treated as an exceptional circumstance?
No.
Mere absence, personal inconvenience, travel, misunderstanding of the timetable, lack of preparation, or failure to check the examination schedule shall not ordinarily constitute sufficient grounds for special consideration.
Exceptional consideration is intended for genuine, unavoidable and substantiated circumstances beyond the reasonable control of the student.
21. What happens if a student submits false or fabricated documents?
Submission of false, fabricated, misleading or materially incomplete documents shall result in rejection of the request.
Where appropriate, such conduct may also attract disciplinary action under the applicable Institute rules and regulations.
The Institute reserves the right to verify the authenticity of any document submitted.
ATTENDANCE AND ELIGIBILITY
22. What is the attendance requirement for appearing in the Make-up Examination?
As per the MIT Mysore Examination Manual:
- For theory courses, the minimum attendance required for the Make-up Examination is 85%.
- For integrated courses, the minimum attendance requirement is 85% separately in theory and laboratory components, as applicable.
- A Make-up Examination is not conducted for a laboratory course.
The latest approved Examination Manual and regulations shall prevail.
23. Are there any provisions for students who represented MIT Mysore in sports, cultural or co-curricular activities?
Yes.
As per the Examination Manual, a student who has represented the Institute in sports/cultural/co-curricular activities on deputation and has maintained a minimum attendance of 75% may be eligible for the Make-up Examination, subject to the prescribed conditions and approval.
Such deputation must be duly authorized and supported by appropriate Institute records.
APPLICATION AND EXAMINATION PROCESS
24. Is a separate application required for the Make-up Examination?
Where an application is prescribed by the Office of the Controller of Examinations, the eligible student shall complete the application within the notified deadline and follow the prescribed procedure.
Failure to submit the application or complete the required formalities within the stipulated period may result in the student not being permitted to appear.
25. Is an examination fee payable for the Make-up Examination?
Any applicable examination fee shall be as prescribed and notified by the Office of the Controller of Examinations for the particular examination.
Students shall refer to the latest official notification for:
- examination fee;
- payment procedure;
- last date for payment; and
- applicable late fee, if any.
26. What should a student verify before appearing for the Make-up Examination?
Students should carefully verify:
- USN/Student ID;
- Semester;
- Course code;
- Course title;
- Grade awarded;
- Eligibility status;
- Attendance status;
- Examination application;
- Examination fee/payment status;
- Date and session of examination;
- Examination hall/venue; and
- Any special instructions issued by the Office of the CoE.
Any discrepancy should be brought to the notice of the concerned authority immediately.
27. Can the Make-up Examination timetable be changed at the request of an individual student?
Ordinarily, no.
Students shall appear according to the timetable officially notified by the Office of the CoE.
The Institute shall make reasonable efforts to prepare an appropriate examination schedule; however, students shall not ordinarily be entitled to alteration of the notified examination date/time for individual convenience.
Any exceptional request shall be considered only by the competent authority under the applicable regulations.
28. What if a student has two examinations on the same day?
Students having backlog courses may, under the approved examination regulations, have:
- two examinations in different sessions on the same day; or
- examinations on consecutive days.
The Institute shall make reasonable efforts to avoid unavoidable clashes. However, where the timetable is finalized and a clash is unavoidable, the examination timetable shall not ordinarily be altered merely at the request of an individual student.
Students shall follow the instructions issued by the Office of the CoE.
29. What happens if a student does not appear for the Make-up Examination after being permitted to do so?
A student who has been granted permission to appear for the Make-up Examination is expected to utilize the opportunity as per the notified schedule.
Failure to appear shall be treated in accordance with the applicable Academic Rules & Regulations and examination provisions.
A separate/special examination shall not be presumed or claimed as an automatic right merely because permission was granted for the scheduled Make-up Examination.
CLARIFICATION OF EXAMINATION CATEGORIES
30. Is a Make-up Examination the same as a Supplementary Examination or a subsequent SEE?
No.
These terms should not be treated as interchangeable.
Make-up Examination
Primarily applicable to eligible students with I-Grade/X-Grade, and to such exceptional cases as may be specifically considered and approved under the prevailing regulations.
Subsequent SEE
Applicable, among other cases, to students who have secured an F-Grade and are required to reappear for the concerned course.
Supplementary Examination
Where the term is used under a particular scheme/regulation, its applicability shall be governed by that specific provision and the corresponding official notification.
Students shall rely on the terminology used in the latest approved MIT Mysore Academic Rules & Regulations and examination notification.
31. Whom should a student contact for clarification regarding Make-up Examination eligibility?
The Institute recognizes that students may occasionally face circumstances that are serious, unavoidable and beyond their reasonable control.
Accordingly, a student who is unable to appear for a scheduled regular examination due to circumstances such as:
- death of a parent or immediate/direct family member;
- hospitalization of the student on the examination date(s);
- serious medical emergency; or
- any other exceptional circumstance considered genuine and deserving,
may submit a request for special consideration to the competent authority.
The request shall be supported by appropriate documentary evidence and shall be subject to verification and approval.
Important:
Special consideration is not an automatic entitlement to a Make-up Examination.
Permission, wherever granted, shall be based on:
- genuineness of the circumstances;
- documentary evidence;
- academic and attendance eligibility;
- compliance with prescribed procedures; and
- approval of the competent authority.
SPECIAL PROVISION FOR GENUINE EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES
Students should carefully verify:
- USN/Student ID;

IMPORTANT REGULATORY NOTE
This FAQ is intended to provide student-friendly clarification of the Make-up Examination provisions and shall be read together with the applicable MIT Mysore Autonomous Academic Rules & Regulations, Examination Manual, Academic Calendar, examination notifications and subsequent amendments.
In the event of any inconsistency between this FAQ and:
- the approved Academic Rules & Regulations;
- Examination Manual;
- Academic Calendar;
- examination notification;
- subsequent amendments/circulars; or
- directions issued by the competent academic/examination authority,
the latest approved statutory/regulatory document or official notification shall prevail.
Nothing contained in this FAQ shall be construed as creating a right or entitlement beyond that provided under the approved Academic Rules & Regulations.
